Children’s Mercy Kansas City and KVC Health Systems will make way for a new mental health campus in Olathe as part of a joint venture initiative.

The joint venture will see the construction of a new $53 million mental health care facility equipped with 72 beds, 48 beds for pediatric patients, 24 for adults. Development for the project is aimed to complete in late 2024, according to a news release.

Furthermore, the 72,700-square-foot campus will feature six private courtyards, walking paths, and dining and activity space. The campus is estimated to care for the capacity of more than 3,400 patients annually and will create approximately 150 new jobs.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the planned facility was held Thursday with Kansas elected officials in attendance.

“The need to strengthen mental health services is a nonpartisan issue that affects all Kansans, rural and urban alike—and addressing the need pays dividends for everyone,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “A lack of psychiatric beds has been one of the largest barriers to providing mental health care in our state. When completed, this state-of-the-art hospital will take significant pressure off our health care systems.”

The project continues to acquire additional philanthropy for the campus.

Build and construction for the campus is helmed by JE Dunn Construction while Hoefer Welker is the architect and interior designer.
