Chewy, Inc. expanding with new location in Belton, Mo.

The online pet product retailer announced it has chosen the Kansas City area to build an eCommerce fulfillment center, expected to bring in 1,200 new jobs.

Looking to expand operations, Chewy, Inc., an online retailer offering pet products, supplies and prescriptions, has chosen Belton, Mo. as the newest location for expansion.

The dual-headquartered company plans to bring roughly 1,200 new jobs to the Kansas City area through the planned opening of the new 800,000-sq.-ft. eCommerce fulfillment in Belton, according to a Tuesday evening news release from the Kansas City Area Development Council.

“We are thrilled to open our first fulfillment center in Missouri and continue to grow our team Chewy, Inc. Vice President of Communications and Public Relations, Diane Pelkey, said. “We’re so excited to be a part of this community and look forward to having a presence in the region.”

The center in Belton will be one of the largest fulfillment centers in its network by square footage, according to release.

“I know that I speak on behalf of the City Council when I say how excited we are about the opportunities this project creates for our city,” Jeff Davis, mayor of Belton, Mo., said.

Founded in 2011, Chewy operates out of more than 15 locations, including 6.1 million sq. ft. of fulfillment, across the U.S. and offers pet products from more than 2,000 brands, the release said.

“Now more than ever, Missouri’s innovative businesses, logistics infrastructure and talented workforce are critical to our economy,” Missouri Gov. Mike Parson said. “Chewy, Inc.’s decision to expand in Belton and create new jobs for Missouri families is a testament to our ongoing business strengths even as we work to recover from COVID-19. We welcome Chewy to Missouri and look forward to working together as the company grows and invests in our state.”
