The U.S. Department of Commerce has awarded BioNexus KC $500,000 to help drive biotech companies’ growth and increase jobs in Kansas City.
In October, the Biden-Harris administration announced the KC region was one of the 31 technology hubs in the U.S. that showed potential for rapid growth in the tech sector. The program’s Consortium Accelerator Award allows KC BioHub, an organization led by BioNexus KC, to continue planning efforts for future implementation of grant funding, according to a release from U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids, D-Kansas and Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, D-Missouri.
“With our top-notch research capabilities and talented workforce, the KC region is ready to lead the country in innovation,” Davids said in the release. “These new investments will help KC BioHub continue its crucial work, create good-paying jobs, and attract skilled workers. Congressman Cleaver and I will continue to be its biggest champions in Congress as it applies for future grant opportunities that benefit our region.”
“As strong supporters of the bipartisan CHIPS Act, I’m thrilled to join Representative Davids in announcing another $500,000 in federal funding that will enable the KC BioHub to continue expanding and developing this burgeoning industry throughout the KC Region,” Cleaver said.
Kansas City was previously seeking a grant of $75 million, however, it was missing from the list of 12 tech hubs that split $504 million earlier in July. BioNexus KC’s efforts have so far earned them $10.6 million from 110 partners across Missouri and Kansas.
The second round of Tech Hub grant recipients have not yet been announced.
