Aramark to lay off KC stadium, convention workers

By Madison Parry

Nearly 600 local employees of food-services contractor Aramark are out of work or have reduced hours.  An ongoing decline in business has led to the company’s decision to cut back on staff at both Kauffman Stadium and the Kansas City Convention Center.

The continued impact of COVID-19 has touched yet another company, Aramark announcing last week that that it will be cutting staff and work hours for hundreds of employees at both Kauffman Stadium and the Kansas City Convention Center.

Around 600 regional employees between the stadium and convention center will be affected in the layoffs.

Food-services contractor Aramark made the decision following word from Kauffman stadium officials that full service would not be needed from the vendor for the time being, due largely to a decline in customers.

The Kansas City Convention Center informed Aramark of the same, saying for an unknown period of time, they will only need a fraction of the company’s services.

Aramark cited an “unprecedented disruption to our business” because of COVID-19 and will lay off 512 hourly employees and eight salaries workers at the stadium, reports the Associated Press. Another 48 hourly workers will have their hours cut.

At the Kansas City Convention Center, the company intends to lay off 57 employees and cut the hours of 10 others.
