Amazon to open delivery hubs in cities, suburbs nationwide

The e-commerce giant is making plans to construct around 1,000 small hubs to cities and surrounding areas to bring products closer to customers, hoping to gain an increased presence across different regions through the setup of quick-delivery warehouses.

Amazon delivery hubs and delivery trucks are expected to make an increased appearance in cities and suburbs across the U.S., the e-commerce giant making plans to construct around 1,000 small hubs in different regions nationwide to bring products closer to customers and speed up delivery.

The company usually puts new delivery stations inside existing warehouses, or signs long-term leases with development firms to build them to its exacting specifications, reports Bloomberg.

Exact locations for these hubs have not been released beyond the announcement that they will be placed in cities and surrounding suburbs.

A typical hub can generate more than 1,000 vehicle trips each day, reports Bloomberg, often in areas where roads are already congested which raises some concern for the more urban areas where these hubs are to be placed.

For these delivery hubs, the typical delivery station is around 200,000 square feet, or about one-fourth the size of one of the company’s giant fulfillment centers.

Large lots are included in the construction of these spaces, where a large quantity of workers can park personal vehicles and where Amazon delivery vans can be placed.

Spurred in part by delivery delays brought on by an increase in online shopping due to COVID-19, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is making the investment in delivery hubs and warehouses to rise above competition.
