$600M requested for Johnson County Gateway road project

Federal funding has been requested by the City of Lenexa, Kan. to complete the Johnson County Gateway exchange project. The city says funding would cover costs to complete the third phase of the project. Included would be the construction of a flyover ramp and roadwork on I-435.

The city of Lenexa bypassed the Kansas Department of Transportation and instead requested about $600 million from the federal government to pay for the third phase of the Johnson County Gateway roads project.

Funding has been requested to pay for the completion of the third phase of the Gateway exchange project. Including would be a flyover ramp on I-35 northbound and I-435 westbound improvements to the I-435 interchange at 95th Street.

The Kansas Department of Transportation said the project is still years away from a construction start. The city did not coordinate with KDOT to request the funding.

The second phase of the Gateway exchange was completed in 2016 and cost about $288 million.

At the time, it was the second-largest construction project underway in the Kansas City area. It took more than two years to finish and was the state’s first design-build project.
