You’ve probably read the stats: Half of all companies in this country fail before the end of their fifth year in business. And most of the remainder won’t make it past their 10th year.
But why? Sometimes, it’s the right product at the wrong time, or in the wrong market. Sometimes, conditions beyond our control—the dot.com crash of 2000, the financial crisis of 2008, a Great Recession or a global pandemic—will kick the legs out from under an otherwise viable enterprise.
The real answer to that question should be: Why not? Why do some companies make it from startup to profitability, from stability to rapid growth, and from rapid growth to national or even global prominence?
Again, multiple factors might be at work. But here’s one that is almost universal with successful companies: They are the very best at what they do. More important, their customers believe that to be true.
So it’s not surprising that, with our Best of Business Kansas City awards for 2025, you’ll see some very familiar names among the Gold, Silver and Bronze medalists. They earned that recognition from Ingram’s readers—a highly discriminating consumer base disproportionately representing affluent and influential people who have made their mark in business.
It’s the one time each year when we turn the decision-making over to readers for a recognition feature. And in nearly 40 years of balloting, they’ve been on the mark far more than they’ve missed. Some of the Gold-level winners since that first publication in 1987 have been in business this entire time. Some are relative newcomers to this level of recognition.
But all earned their way onto these lists by virtue of having something their competitors didn’t: A product, a service, an event or a cause that deeply resonates with Ingram’s readers. They do what they do at a high level, and in many cases, they’re rewarded for that year after year for their commitment to excellence, their embrace of consistency, and their service to a community that transcends profit. Join us in saluting each of them.
BEST BAKERY
It placed in the coffee-house category, but this is where McLain’s has the home-field advantage: A Kansas City staple for 80 years, it has blossomed from its Waldo roots to become Kansas City’s go-to place for pastries and desserts—and if time avails, an enticing breakfast and lunch venue. From the turnovers to the cheesecakes, every sweet tooth meets its match at any of six locations. Dolce Bakery in Prairie Village, artists in cakes, cookies and breakfast sweets, ices the Silver. Bronze is scooped up by Heirloom Bakery & Hearth, where the 7 a.m. opening brings them out early—but don’t dally, because most days, it closes mid-afternoon.
BEST BARBECUE
Another year, another rock fight—with smoke—for top honors in one of our signature categories. Almost defying the mathematical probabilities, we have a tie for Gold. We could have broken that by putting a staff thumb on the scales, but this is about readers’ preferences. And they are evenly divided here between Joe’s Kansas City and Jack Stack Barbecue. Ribs, burnt ends, chicken, pulled pork: You simply can’t go wrong with quality and flavor at either, and plenty of opportunities—three for Joe’s and seven for Jack Stack. Charging hard to finish with Silver is Q39, another fan favorite in Midtown and Overland Park. A newcomer to the voting is Sierra BBQ in Lenexa.
BEST BREWERY
More than 35 years after Kansas City had its first real taste of craft beer, loyal fans of brewing arts have embraced Boulevard Brewing Co. as their go-to brand, and thus, it is again in 2025. The iconic brewery on Southwest Boulevard earns another Gold for excellence across a wide spectrum of ale styles/formulations. More than a decade into its own run as the German-influenced alternative hometown brewer, KC Bier Co. in Waldo, steps up for Silver honors. There’s a tie for Bronze between Martin City Brewery and Downtown’s Casual Animal Brewery.
BEST BURGER
A great thing about Five Guys—yes, in addition to the spectacular fries and signature burgers—is access: 15 metro locations from near KCI to Belton. Small wonder that the franchise ran away with voting (again) this year. Burgers dominate the menu, but don’t sleep on the hot dogs, veggie and grilled cheese or BLT options as main courses. Small but mighty in comparison, Town Topic sacks up Silver to go from its two locations just blocks apart Downtown. For those who prefer something stronger than a soft drink with their order, first-time honoree Burg & Barrel in Lenexa, Overland Park and Leawood pairs the fare with craft beer. That’s good for Bronze honors, shared with another newcomer, Waldo’s Cosmo Burger.
BEST BUSINESS BREAKFAST
The Big Biscuit dishes up its first Gold-medal performance, riding a wave of organizational growth that has seen its footprint grow not just in Missouri and Kansas, but Oklahoma and Arkansas. And for good reason, starting with those fluffy golden bits of biscuity heaven available at 15 locations in the immediate area (and more in St. Joseph, Lawrence and Topeka). Even with the price swings in eggs of late, readers aren’t giving up on this breakfast staple. Silver goes to First Watch, for many years the undisputed leader in this category, and still with a loyal voter bloc, dishing it up from nearly a score of area locations. Always popular with their followers, The Classic Cup on the Country Club Plaza and Aixois, in nearby Brookside, split Bronze honors.
BEST BUSINESS LUNCH
The heavy lifting of business-related dining is driven by the midday momentum that carries over to lunch, and here, J. Alexander’s in Overland Park wraps up a second consecutive Gold. How? With everything from soup/salad lighter fare to the more serious burgers and sandwiches to the deal-making steaks, prime rib, seafood or ribs. And don’t pass up the chicken Rattlesnake Pasta. Two pillars of Kansas City dining—steak and barbecue—claim equal shares of the Silver: The Capital Grille and Jack Stack Barbecue. Hard to create a better impression on business clients, especially the out-of-towners, than with these two. Yet another tie here in the Bronze lineup, between the River Market’s Brown & Loe (for small parties, the former bank’s vault room provides an intimate setting) and the Plaza’s Gram & Dun, for dining indoors or on the patio.
BEST BUSINESS DINNER
As the evening begins to set in, thoughts of the workday fade—a bit—but if you’re still working to close a deal, readers again say The Capital Grille is the place to do it. Steaks, seafood, chicken and lighter options—along with a lineup of killer desserts—combine with stellar service to bring your business deliberations to a satisfying close. More seafood-centric is nearby on the Plaza where Ocean Prime reels in this year’s Silver, with a bounty of crab, lobster, shrimp and finned favorites. Bronze is divided between the Plaza’s Stock Hill, a steakhouse staple, and J. Alexander’s.
BEST CATERER
You want a corporate event to truly impress? Then start with the catering and build out from there. Readers say Brancato’s Catering, with more than half a century of laying out exquisite spreads, is the Gold standard. It’s always a tough battle for top honors with Inspired Occasions, where something new, creative and very tasty is always in the works. It grabs Silver this year. From its base in Midtown, The Russell elevates salads and bowls to an art form, but with traditional steak, chicken, fish and more—all good for splitting Bronze honors with KC Catering, providing boxed lunches (hot and cold), hors d’oeuvres and full-service buffet.
BEST COFFEE HOUSE
No time for breakfast? Fine. But there’s always time for that ice-breaking coffee in the morning (and later, if needed). That java jolt is available in multiple varieties at Mildred’s in the Crossroads, but sealing the Gold deal with readers is the broader array of teas (hot and cold), smoothies and more. They lure you with the caffeine—and you find time for breakfast (or lunch) after all, with sandwiches, wraps, vegan hash and more. The crowds at any of six McLain’s area locations are pulled in by the killer pastries and desserts—OK, and the breakfast/light lunch lineups—but the specialty coffee, cappuccino, latte and espresso options are not to be overlooked. Silver? Indeed. Sealing a hometown sweep here with Bronze is The Roasterie, which helped get the caffeine craze started more than 30 years ago and keeps it going with urns that pour it out all day.
BEST DELI
Don’t let the geography fool you: Milwaukee Deli IS all Kansas City, which had its first iteration at the turn of the century. Not this century, the 20th. A lot of pastrami sandwiches have been dished up over the decades since, in various corporate configurations. But the latest snags Gold for its mastery of almost anything you can stack between slices of bread—salmon, meatballs, pulled pork, turkey, roast beef and corned beef—as well as pizzas with more than two dozen topping options. Bagging up Silver is Brookside’s Bella Napoli, combining Italian deli offerings with restaurant and market operations. The Bronze goes to King G in the Crossroads, featuring Italian and American sandwich staples, including the G Steak, rivaling almost any cheesesteak you could find in Philly itself.
BEST FAMILY RESTAURANT
After a run of 16 straight years as the Gold winner was interrupted in 2024, Stroud’s in Overland Park and the Northland is back to claim the top spot for family-oriented dining. And why not? The platters of crispy, pan-fried chicken and bowls of family-style sides harken to the era of Sunday dinners at Grandma’s. And don’t forget the catering potential here. Silver goes to Third Street Social, whether in Lee’s Summit, south Plaza or the Northland, featuring a monster menu across brunch, lunch and dinner time frames, including house-made desserts. For the Bronze, look to Jasper’s Restaurant in south Kansas City, a longtime favorite for those craving a taste of Italy for their gatherings.
BEST GROCERY STORE
It’s not just about what you make at home: A great grocery store meets your needs for hot dishes to go, catering and other items that help you combine your buying into one-stop shopping. Once again, Hy-Vee is the readers’ ideal market experience, bagging Gold at nearly two dozen stores in the region. Readers award Silver to Hen House, with nine locations featuring everything from middle-of-the-store staples to butcher block offerings, pharmacy, and deli with hot dishes to go. The Bronze goes to Cosentino’s Market, one of three to carry that brand, but part of a broader network of 30 other grocery flags flown by the Prairie Village parent.
BEST HAPPY HOUR
Friends, family, co-workers—the company is always more convivial when gathered where they know how to do Happy Hour right. That starts, readers say, with Prime Social on the Plaza, where the rooftop seating brings something extra to the party. Unique variations on cocktails, plus sushi, pizza and the stuff of sharing, help bring the Gold home here. Jumbo shrimp, crab cakes and truffle-shaved ribeye cheesesteak are just a few of the options that keep the good times rolling at Sullivan’s Steakhouse in Leawood, our Silver winner. Bronze honors go to Summit Grill in Waldo, Gladstone and Lee’s Summit.
HEALTHIEST MENU
If you want it fresh, you need it seasonal, and True Food Kitchen gets it. So say readers, who bless this Plaza fixture with Gold for delivering on everything from appetizers to Mediterranean fare, from pizzas and desserts—and don’t forget the signature cocktails (even the zero-proof options). Pure Food + Drink grabs the Silver; a plant-rich menu is center stage, but there’s no shortage of protein add-ons, including salmon, chicken, tuna and tofu. Bronze goes to ProteinHouse, meeting the needs of vegans, vegetarians and more traditional fare, plus protein and acai shakes, coffees, juices and more.
BEST OUTDOOR DINING
The European flavor isn’t limited to the menu at Aixois, the French bistro that adds a touch of the old country with its outdoor dining set in Brookside. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert are all part of the package at this Gold-winning fixture, from Quiche Lorraine in the morning to duck leg confit for dinner. Trezo Mare plates the Silver, where the American appetite for seafood and steaks is infused with an Italian essence. As the name says, the Percheron Rooftop Bar atop the Crossroads Hotel is a perfect setting for cocktails and camaraderie, set against a backdrop of the Downtown skyline.
BEST PIZZA
Categories owned by a single entity are becoming ever more rare, but Minsky’s isn’t relinquishing its status as our Gold winner in this category. The hometown favorite for half a century, it continues to satisfy not just with an array of pie toppings, but with pastas and sandwiches (a particular favorite: the cheesesteak), all served up from any one of 17 area locations. Charging hard toward the heights of reader preferences is Waldo Pizza, where a storied bit of American cuisine gets unique treatment (cauliflower crust, anyone?), along with starters, sandwiches and an impressively broad range of beers. In the Crossroads area, and soon with new digs in Overland Park, Buffalo State Pizza Co. stampedes into the voting to claim Bronze. It splits that distinction with Pizza Tascio, serving New York-style pies from six locations.
MOST ROMANTIC
When love is in the air and dinner is on the agenda, the French region of Provence stands tall among refined appetites here. Two variations on that theme divide the Gold voting here: Café Provence ties with Le Fou Frog for the top spot. The former stands out in a lot of ways, but its Tuesday Prix Fixe four-course dinner is truly unique. And Le Fou Frog blends tastes of both France and New York with its elegant setting in the River Market. The votes came in from all corners in this category, producing a true rarity: ties in all three categories. For Silver, Lidia’s Italian offerings in the Freighthouse district finished tied with the Italian-themed Bacaro Primo in the Crestwood shops. Dividing Bronze were Chaz, where the soft lighting sets the mood in the Raphael Hotel, and Tailleru, a more modern in-
terpretation of French cuisine in Midtown.
BEST SEAFOOD
The coastal snobs sniff at landlocked Kansas City when it comes to seafood. What they don’t know is, the ocean’s bounty is as easily accessed as grass-fed ribeye. Bristol Seafood Grill returns with authority to reclaim the Gold it surrendered in 2024 after a 15-year run at the top. Whether for lunch, dinner or the killer Sunday brunch, the ocean-borne offerings available in the Power & Light District or Leawood locations will always appeal to your upscale dining sensibilities. Ocean Prime nets the Silver with a wide range of seafood available, but to be honest, they had us at the custom-built “Smoking Shellfish Tower.” Check out Earl’s Premier, debuting near the top of the voting here and taking Bronze; the New England influences come through in a big way, with oysters taking center stage.
BEST SPORTS BAR/GRILL
One is a stand-alone; one is a chain. But together, the Brooksider (guess which part of town that’s in?) and the eight area locations of Tanner’s Bar & Grill represent the pinnacle of the sports bar experience for readers, so they share honors for Gold. The fierce competition here spilled over into Silver, where Maloney’s Sports Bar & Grill in Overland Park, a relative newcomer, garnered a tie with The Peanut (the original one), a venerable name in sports-watching and chicken-wing destruction from its base south of the Plaza and in the Garment District. The neighborhood-bar feel of Main Street Tavern scored well with voters, who brought the Midtown establishment into the winner’s circle by awarding Bronze.
BEST STEAKHOUSE
In a city that lent its name to a cut of beef, steak reigns not quite supreme, but it’s right up there with barbecue. We take our steak seriously—and the right-thinking among us will take it medium-rare. Served to order then, at 801 Chophouse, which racks up its third Gold in the past four years. You know steak is done at a high level in Kansas City when Silver winner The Capital Grille is being challenged for reader supremacy. Bronze honors are split between J. Alexander’s and Stock Hill.
BEST SUNDAY BRUNCH
It doesn’t happen often, but there are times when a company comes out of nowhere to seize the imagination—and disposable dollars—of consumers. So it is with HomeGrown, not just showing up in the winner’s circle this year but claiming Gold. Resonating with readers are HomeGrown’s five area locations and a daytime-only menu featuring breakfast, brunch and lunch. Iron Horse Bar & Grill, with the buffet in Lee’s Summit and plate service at its Leawood locations, bags Silver (and are you kidding? $2 mimosas?). The Bronze is a two-way split between Nick and Jake’s (dishing it up in Parkville, Shawnee and Overland Park) and The Classic Cup on the Plaza.
BEST NEW RESTAURANT
It’s not news in the hospitality sector or among frequent diners out: Things have been tough in three restaurant businesses, but as familiar names fade away, others are stepping into the limelight. Case in point: Prima Facie Bistro, snagging Gold with a something-for-everyone menu including signature salads, entrees that span seafood, steak, chicken and pork, sandwiches, desserts and more. Silver goes to Hank’s Garage and Grill in Shawnee, where burgers and dogs are the main attraction, but much more beckons. For Bronze, 30 Hop weighs in from Lee’s Summit and Merriam with a wide mix of comfort foods and libations.
BEST SERVICE
The all-time leader in this category, for ample good reasons, is The Capital Grille, knocking out another Gold from its Plaza digs with a reputation for service that perfectly accents a perfect dinner, whether you’re choosing from the killer lineup of dry-aged steaks, old-world wines or satisfying desserts. J. Alexander’s is back for more medal glory with Silver, with attention to detail that brings each experience to a satisfying conclusion. For Bronze, look to the staff behind the innovative menu at The Restaurant at 1900.
BEST OVERALL RESTAURANT
Did we say innovative? Yes, sweet pea ice-cream sandwiches are a thing at The Restaurant at 1900, where you can find enticing offerings that start with meals-by-themselves salads, duck-egg omelets for lunch or a dinner lineup where braised short ribs vie for your attention with rainbow trout, the double-cut pork chop or soft-shell crab. That’s good for Gold, readers say, and since there’s only one “best,” everyone else is playing for second place in this category.
BEST ASIAN RESTAURANT
More than 62 percent of the world’s population hails from Asia, so you can bet this category covers an enormous range of food types, styles and interpretations. The offerings at Bamboo Penny’s, though, are the Gold standard for readers. From that Leawood location, diners can attain their Thai high or fulfill their Polynesian cravings, among other stylings. Silver goes to Thai Place in Overland Park, featuring various rice/noodle combos and curry-flavored protein sources across the spectrum. For Bronze, you have to admire the brand loyalty of those voting for Bo Lings—even though this Plaza icon has rebranded to Heritage Asian Kitchen. What did remain was the lineup of offerings as broad as Asia itself.
BEST FRENCH RESTAURANT
Hmmm … the category above for Most Romantic? That should tell you something about the role food plays in France. Gold goes to aixois, where your classic French food fix can be met Mondays through Saturdays in Brookside. Café Provence in Prairie Village scores the Silver with its varied menu that includes seafood, fowl, lamb and steaks. Bronze honors fall to Le Fou Frog, where the lobster bisque and onion soup set the stage for a Francophile feast.
BEST ITALIAN RESTAURANT
From alpine influences to Mediterranean tastes to robust Tuscan fare, “Italian” food isn’t just one thing. But mastery of every interpretation earns Garozzo’s Ristorante the Gold (again), and not just for the main courses; try the Heaven & Hell appetizer combo of pesto ravioli in cream sauce and jumbo shrimp in diablo. We have a two-way split for Silver between Brookside’s Bella Napoli (lunch and dinner, yes, but don’t overlook the deli and market options) and Jasper’s in south Kansas City, which has been doing Italian right for more than 70 years. From the Freight House district downtown, Lidia’s comes through with the Bronze.
BEST MEXICAN RESTAURANT
At the gateway between Downtown and Hispanic neighborhoods of Kansas City’s West Side, you’ll find Manny’s, which has one of this region’s deepest menus of all things south of the border. Plated and buffet-style lunch and dinner, to be sure, but there’s also a Saturday brunch option not to be missed. Silver goes to Rudy’s Tenampa Taqueria, getting your attention with the guacamole and holding all the way through to the churros at both its Lenexa and Westport locations. Wrap It Up, a Tex-Mex grill in Downtown’s
Garment District, garners the Bronze.
BEST ART GALLERY
Kansas Citians have always had an eye for the beautiful–as their choices for the best art gallery reveal. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art remains the Gold standard for classical and contemporary art—and with a $170 million expansion on the way, it’s sure to retain that distinction for a long time to come. Silver and Bronze were in a tight race this year, with Eva Reynolds Fine Art Gallery’s appreciation for contemporary American aesthetics narrowly claiming Silver and Leopold Gallery + Art Consulting’s bold modern art selections taking Bronze.
BEST CHARITABLE EVENT
They don’t call it the Big Slick for nothing! Kansas City’s Golden charitable event, which just concluded its 2025 installment, brings together the best our fine city has to offer—a fun night of KC-native Hollywood and TV entertainers whose community spirit has raised millions for Children’s Mercy. Silver this year is shared by two events: Breakthrough T1D Dream Gala and the Snow Ball Gala, benefiting Type-1 diabetes research and the Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, respectively. Bronze goes to the Treads & Threads Black Tie Gala, benefiting cancer research at The University of Kansas Health System.
BEST CASINO
We might not have taken the Super Bowl this year, but Kansas City keeps winning with these three amazing casinos. Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway takes Gold for its fast-paced, high-stakes action, where you can game and take in other action on the big screens. Silver winner Ameristar Casino, has been a part of Kansas City since 1997 and offers 24-hour gaming and premium hotel suites. Harrah’s easily takes Bronze for its fun and fair slots and table games.
BEST DAY TRIP
Want to get away? You’ll have plenty of company along Massachusetts Street, or at KU football and basketball games, if you head to Gold-winning Lawrence. Easily accessible from Kansas City, it’s no longer just a college town, but a day-trip destination in its own right with shopping, dining and other attractions. Another longtime favorite of day trippers here is the small-town charm of nearby WESTON, which earns Silver. Two other college towns a bit further out, Columbia, Mo., and Manhattan, Kan., divide the Bronze.
BEST FAMILY OUTING/VENUE
Open-air outings dominate this category, fitting for the summer months. Starting with our Gold winner, Chicken N Pickle, KC’s ever-popular fried chicken and pickleball destination that has spread the good news of food and fun across the nation. The Kansas City Zoo takes Silver this year, and with a brand new aquarium that houses over 8,000 animals, it’s easy to see why. This year, Bronze goes to a tie between open-air auditoriums: Royals games at Kauffman Stadium and fun among and under the stars of Starlight Theatre.
BEST GOLF COURSE
Widely acclaimed across the Midwest and in Golf Digest for its excellent facilities and its unique, challenging course, Shadow Glen Golf Club is an easy shoo-in for our category’s Gold. Silver goes to Hallbrook Country Club, whose expansive facilities offer everything from fine dining, tennis courts, swimming and, yes, beautiful fairways and challenging greens. Mission Hills Country Club takes Bronze this year, beloved for its service and historic course that has challenged players since 1914.
BEST JAZZ OR BLUES VENUE
In a jazz city, what’s better than spending the evening at the likes of the Green Lady Lounge, where music, food and wine flow freely? Our readers say: very little is better since the bands and the drinks are top-notch, earning Gold. The Phoenix was selected for Silver recognition this year, an establishment whose history stretches all the way to 1905. And Bronze goes to Black Dolphin, an intimate location that offers original compositions every weekend.
BEST LOCAL ENTERTAINER
The Crossroad Sound, trusted by major brands like Sporting KC and the Chiefs, is our Gold winner, providing the vibes your party needs. Amber Underwood Flutienastiness is our Silver winner with a unique artistic voice. Bronze goes to jazz and blues ensemble Grand Marquis, entertaining America for more than 23 years.
BEST PERFORMING ARTS VENUE
We love the performing arts, and Kansas City has some of the best destinations for live performances. The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, home of the Kansas City Symphony, is the obvious Gold winner. Take in a ballet, an opera, classical music performances, or live shows from a variety of groups. The Kansas City Convention Center is a firm favorite for conventions, but Municipal Auditorium is our Silver winner. And, of course, Starlight Theatre, with impeccable facilities and top-tier performances—is an easy Bronze winner.
BEST SPORTING EVENT TO ENTERTAIN CLIENTS
With our emergence as an American sporting destination, residents are well aware that it was only a matter of time. The Chiefs are still the Gold-winning sporting event of choice for our readers, and after these exciting past few seasons, you needn’t ask why. Meanwhile, the Royals are still a beloved presence, dominating the summer sports scene to steal Silver. Bronze this year is a tie between the KC Current and Sporting KC—not surprising, since we’re all too excited for the World Cup next year.
BEST THEATER
We have more live-production venues than movie houses on this year’s theater list. That said, B&B Theaters still takes Gold with eight locations around the metro area. If you’re partial to entertainment in the open air on a warm summer’s night, Kansas City’s historic Starlight Theatre, the Silver honoree, invites you to many popular Broadway performances. And Bronze goes to a classic combo, dinner and a show at New Theatre & Restaurant—gourmet meals, Broadway shows; what’s not to love?
BEST WEEKEND GETAWAY
Taking the weekend to relax is our favorite summer pastime. Leave the office on a Friday afternoon and immediately slide into the Lake of the Ozarks. You can spend a weekend at our Gold prize winner fishing, boating, playing golf, or visiting a myriad of attractions. It’s literally the perfect summer getaway—just like our Silver winner, Branson, Mo., where you can visit Silver Dollar City with the kids (or without!). It’s one of the best theme parks in the Midwest, or you can explore amazing museums or take in a show at America’s live music destination.
BEST ACCOUNTING/CONSULTING FIRM
Audit, tax, and business consulting services are all under one roof at RubinBrown, where it’s not just full service; it’s the pinnacle, say readers who bless this firm with Gold. Better known for its wealth-management acumen, Overland Park’s Creative Planning has worked hard to expand its service line, and that pays off with reader recognition for Silver honors. Two venerable institutions here (albeit one with a relatively new brand) split the Bronze: longtime powerhouse CBIZ and the former BKD, then FORVIS, now Forvis Mazars brand.
BEST ADVERTISING AGENCY (LARGE)
Standing strong in Kansas City during its rise to global prominence, the VML brand returned to its roots in 2024 when parent WPP merged its two largest advertising-public relations enterprises. No surprise, then, that it’s the readers’ pick for Gold among large agencies. Silver goes to BarkleyOKRP, itself a rebranding after the hometown Barkley merger early last year. Bronze honors produce a split between MMGY GLOBAL, serving the travel sector, and the data science/messaging whizzes at Bernstein-Rein.
BEST ADVERTISING AGENCY (SMALL)
Family-owned Trozzolo Communications Group continues to expand its reach, its service lines and its staff, with a strong presence in its hometown as well as in Milwaukee. The KC connection proves solid, earning Gold among smaller communications agencies. Hard-charging CRUX has leveraged the concept of fractional chief marketing officer into Silver recognition. The brand-building power of JNA Advertising captures Bronze.
BEST ARCHITECTURAL/DESIGN FIRM
Over and over, Kansas City’s design community has demonstrated that the size of staff doesn’t dictate the scale of achievement. Proving the point this year is Hoefer Welker, which has leveraged its skills, particularly in design and engineering services, to emerge with the Gold as a national player with additional offices in Texas and Florida. Silver goes to HNTB, designers of key elements in the nation’s transportation infrastructure for more than a century, with a massive national footprint of nearly 85 offices in 35 states. The Bronze goes to PGAV Architects, with a well-rounded portfolio of work in educational, office, civic, hospitality, senior living and life sciences settings.
BEST BANK
Tracing its roots back to 1865, Commerce Bank has been there almost every step of the way as this former cowtown has emerged as a Midwestern economic pillar. The factors that get you to $32 billion in assets are many and varied, but they align precisely with the interests of our business readership, which awards the Gold here. With its recent sale to First National Bank of Omaha, the fate of the Country Club Bank brand is undetermined, but the emotional tie with readers remains strong—they bestow Silver on CCB. Bronze voting produced a bit of an odd split: Enterprise Bank on the traditional banking side and CommunityAmerica Credit Union, this market’s dominant player in that slice of financial services.
BEST ENGINEERING FIRM
Known as a national center of excellence in engineering services, Kansas City is blessed with global and national talent, the biggest of which, Burns & McDonnell, earns this year’s Gold. Explosive growth over the past decade has moved it to No. 1 in both revenues and engineering employment here. A two-way tie for Silver brings us a comparative mighty mite in PMA Engineering, designing everything from industrial to office to multifamily (and in between), and Henderson Companies, parent to the building-systems specialists in electrical, plumbing, HVAC and more. Bronze goes to Black & Veatch, the Overland Park global powerhouse.
BEST COMMERCIAL CONSTRUCTION COMPANY
Three years after ending the 22-year Gold run for the region’s biggest builder, McCownGordon Construction again defends that turf with top honors. It’s gone from a turn-of-the-century startup to a supra-regional powerhouse, with offices in multiple states, and is bearing down on the $1 billion billings threshold. Silver goes to the Kansas City office of New York-based Turner Construction, which landed one of the region’s biggest contracting plums ever with the $4 billion Panasonic battery plant in De Soto. Bronze goes to a longtime No. 1 company that is now among the nation’s 20 largest builders, JE Dunn Construction Co.
BEST COMMERCIAL PRINTER
Print is fading away in the digital age? Not on your life: Large signage, digital or offset printing, prepress and design services—all the way up to mailing—have commercial customers solidly behind SOLI PRINTING, the Crossroads-based company that comes away with Gold. Bringing similar competencies to the table, ALPHA GRAPHICS (either Downtown or Olathe), secures Silver honors along with ALPINE LITHO-GRAPHICS of south Kansas City. Bronze goes to DREXEL TECHNOLOGIES, of-fering full-service tech and print solutions.
BEST COMMERCIAL REAL-ESTATE FIRM
The bifurcated world of commercial realty—industrial and multifamily booming; office and retail limping along—requires a deft and dexterous skill set, which readers say you’ll find in abundance at Newmark Zimmer, this year’s Gold honoree. Its reputation is burnished by more than 500 successful CRE transactions a year, covering all 50 states. Silver goes to the No. 1 company managing and developing commercial projects in this market, Block Real Estate Services. Meanwhile, Reece Commercial demonstrates that it’s about much more than selling homes, packing up Bronze in the commercial realm.
BEST DRY CLEANER
There’s no quicker way to the hearts and minds of dry-cleaning customers than through access, and Pride Cleaners has plenty of it. With more than 40 area locations, readers say this laundering legend wins the Gold for services that include formal wear cleaning, wash and fold, alterations and uniform-cleaning for larger commercial customers. For Silver, look to Arrow Fabricare Services, the Midtown fixture that handles everything from dry cleaning and formalwear to alterations, rugs/drapes, bedding, furniture covering, water/fire restoration, and more. Tide Cleaners, another perennial member of the winner’s circle, dusts off the Bronze at each of its four area locations.
BEST GROUND TRANSPORTATION
Gold honors in this business and special-event staple go to LEADER Worldwide Chauffeured Services, thanks to its expertise in executive travel and related services, as well as a fleet of vehicles for all special occasions, from sedans to SUVs to executive coaches with seating for up to 56 people. While they upfit and sell the vehicles at Master’s Transportation, rentals of vans, shuttles—even school buses—are also part of the equation, earning this Belton company the Silver. Bronze goes to Agenda: USA, the region’s largest accredited Destination Management Company.
BEST HEALTH CLUB
Being in peak condition in the office requires no small dedication to the gym, and there, Woodside delivers for both executives and Average Joes/Janes alike. Cardio equipment, weight training, swimming, tennis and spa services are just a few parts of a package that readers say is good for Gold. As the name implies, the region’s pro football pride is represented with Chiefs Fit, with the team in a partnership that promises fitness for any of its subjects in the Kingdom at its Plaza and Overland Park locations, earning Silver. The ubiquitous Genesis Health Clubs, with more than a dozen area locations and 60 in 11 states, lifts the Bronze.
BEST HEALTH INSURER
Readers vote their interests in these awards; health-insurance consumers vote with their dollars. Both align behind BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD OF KANSAS CITY, our Gold winner and the region’s biggest health-insurance provider for a reason. Racking up Silver is UNITED HEALTHCARE, the national powerhouse serving corporate and individual clients. CIGNA, providing health, dental and Medicare coverage, wraps up the Bronze honors.
BEST HOSPITAL/MEDICAL CENTER
Soaring to Gold status—and bringing a sparkling new brand to the party, too—NKC HEALTH secures a tie for top honors with AdventHealth. The former recognizes longstanding ties between North Kansas City Hospital and Meritas Health; the latter has undergone a massive expansion of its main campus in Merriam and doubled down with new facilities in Overland Park and Lenexa. Saint Luke’s Health System, now a part of the statewide BJC Health System, sews up the Silver with a metro footprint that covers north, east, south and the main Plaza flagship hospital. Bronze goes to The University of Kansas Health System, now administering hospitals in Olathe and Liberty, as well as the mother ship near Midtown, making it the market leader for hospital services.
BEST HOTEL
When civic champions said Kansas City needed a world-class hotel to match its convention center appeal, their vision was realized with the 2020 opening of Loews Kansas City. It earns Gold here, not just for the clean, modern lines of its guest rooms, but for wining and dining options as a Downtown gathering-space anchor. To the southern edge of Downtown, Crossroads Hotel has added new depth to overnight accommodations and get together venues, good for Silver. Meanwhile, out in Johnson County, the Sheraton Overland Park adds its own element of high-level room stays adjacent to a major attraction, the Overland Park Convention Center.
BEST JANITORIAL/BUILDING SERVICES COMPANY
As the industry has evolved from basic janitorial functions into full-service building and grounds maintenance services, City Wide Facility Solutions has been part of the unfolding story for nearly 65 years. Now franchising the concept nationwide, the company serves hospitals, churches, auto dealerships, fitness centers, banks, hotels and many others, earning Gold votes in the process. Clean Heart Maids cleans up Silver, taking the concept of home-level attention to detail and delivering it to commercial clients in Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas. Jani-King sweeps up this year’s Bronze, driven by increased exposure to clients through franchising.
BEST LAW FIRM
The Kansas City legal services market is dominated by the Big Five, but not all can medal in this category—that’s just math. But it’s not exclusive, as we see here. Gold, for example, goes to Spencer Fane, not the biggest firm but certainly a full-services player boasting skilled lawyers in two dozen business-law specialties. Also punching above its weight with readers is Armstrong Teasdale, earning Silver and known for nearly 125 years for services rendered to clients worldwide. From its founding by three intrepid lawyers in 1972, Polsinelli PC has become a national powerhouse and AmLaw 100 rock star, good for Bronze honors.
BEST MEETING/CONFERENCE FACILITY
Flexing convention-appeal muscle from the suburbs—defying industry trends that zero in on urban-core facilities—Overland Park Convention Center stands tall in that space and delivers Gold-level services. The Kansas City Convention Center and its massive Bartle Hall secure the Silver, and that wraps up this truncated category, given that the top two players in the market are—at least in the minds of readers—a significant cut above the rest of the region’s facilities.
BEST REMODELER
The pandemic created a new value proposition for home ownership, with stay-at-home careers bringing increased appetite for home office, expanded entertainment space, outdoor living with decks and patios. That, say readers, is where Gyllenborg Construction delivers Gold winning solutions for homeowners. Catalyst Construction picks up the Silver, operating at the intersection of fine carpentry and design/building science. For Bronze, readers turn to Schloegel Design Remodel, tackling not just kitchens and bathrooms but whole-home remodeling projects.
BEST RESIDENTIAL REAL-ESTATE FIRM
Through various branding iterations over the decades, the firm we know today as ReeceNichols has emerged as the undisputed leader in home sales throughout the region. With 2,200-plus agents, the firm delivered more than $5 billion in sales during the most recent cycle. That’s precisely the kind of performance our readers see as Gold-worthy. A national name in all things related to the American Dream, Better Homes and Gardens puts the SOLD sign on the Silver honors. Multiple independent offices flying the RE/MAX Realty flag help that familiar brand wrap up Bronze.
BEST RETIREMENT COMMUNITY
It pioneered the concept of senior living communities in the Kansas City area, so naturally, JOHN KNOX VILLAGE has the scale, the history, the services and the reputation that garners Gold for its accommodations with assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing for senior residents. For more than a generation, SILVERCREST AT DEER CREEK in Overland Park and for nearly as long, SANTA MARTA in Olathe have set senior-living standards in Johnson County, and they come deadlocked for Silver. Another nearby power player in that space is LAKEVIEW VILLAGE in Lenexa, which seizes the Bronze.
BEST SPA
There are those who understand the power of the spa—and then there are those who simply don’t know what they’re missing. Among the former group are readers and patrons of Woodhouse Spa, the Leawood haven specializing in renewal of body, mind and spirit with massage, facial and body treatments, waxing and—this is a good one—the digital detox, getting you away from tech for the day. Silver goes to bijin, the venerable Prairie Village site delivering styling and rejuvenation services. Bronze goes to the ever-popular Elms Hotel and Spa, which literally removes you from the city stress with its exurban charms.
BEST WEALTH MANAGEMENT FIRM
Blossoming from a boutique wealth advisory into a comprehensive provider of wealth- and risk-management services nationwide, CREATIVE PLANNING has enamored itself with readers here not just for its business model, but its civic engagement and philanthropy. No surprise to see Gold here. A monster deal completed early this year propels MARINER to status as the region’s largest wealth manager, with more than $560 billion in assets, and that’s good for Silver. Splitting the Bronze honors are two more Johnson County firms managing multi-billions in assets, PRIME CAPITAL FINANCIAL and
FAS WEALTH PARTNERS.
BEST WIRELESS PHONE SERVICE
Since acquiring Sprint in 2020, T-Mobile has helped winnow the candidate pool in this category, so to no one’s surprise, it claims this year’s Gold. And not just by virtue of being a major employer—quality options for wireless services, home Internet and streaming services make it a reader favorite. Dialing up Silver is Verizon, revered for both individual customer services and its suite of business products. Bronze goes to one of the oldest brands in telecom, dating back to the days when it was just phone service—AT&T.
BEST AUTIO DEALER (FOREIGN)
The list of the best foreign auto dealers in the area begins with Aristocrat Motors. Our readers’ Gold selection offers seven convenient locations and a wide selection of Mercedes-Benz, Porche, Jaguar and more luxury brands. Hendrick Lexus Kansas City is the Silver pick this year, where the dedicated sales and service staff are determined to make your car buying experience as luxurious as driving your new Lexus. Legends Toyota rounds off our list with Bronze, offering new and used vehicles with exceptional service and commitment to quality that very few can match.
BEST CORPORATE GIFTS
Where do you go when you need a corporate gift? Our voters are unanimous that Halls Kansas City is the Gold standard. Little wonder, as it’s a Kansas City tradition dating back to 1916 and still offers the highest quality designers, apparel, jewelry, and, yes, gifts. Christopher Elbow Chocolates was voted Silver this year, with a selection of artisanal chocolates and candies offers the perfect gift for special occasions. Bronze this year goes to Meierotto Jewelers for those extra-special occasions where only fine jewelry or watches will do.
BEST FLORIST
Best florist is always a tight race, and this year saw a rare tie for Gold: our readers honestly couldn’t decide who they loved more, The Fiddly Fig or Studio Dan Meiners. Quality is the name of the game, whether you’re in a wedding, just saying hello or offering condolences, both of our Gold winners are the perfect way to decorate. Bergamont + Ivy Design takes Silver for its floral artistry, carefully sculpted to look natural. The Little Flower Shop in Westwood Hills took Bronze this year, and for its arrangements and party planning advice.
BEST JEWLER
It’s beloved for a reason: Meierotto Jewelers is our Gold winner here. Family-owned for more than 40 years, Meierotto understands Kansas City’s tastes as well as anyone and offers designs on watches, rings, and corporate gifts. Tivol was our close Silver winner, with its selection of designer brands from its own beautiful house designs to David Yurman and Lagos. Helzberg Diamonds has been a national brand since 1915, and with its legacy of quality service and exceptionally beautiful products, they’re an easy fit for Bronze.
BEST LIQUOR STORE & WINE SELLER
The Gold winner for best liquor store belongs to a national brand headquartered in Maryland, Total Wine & More. A very recent presence in Kansas City, it’s easy to see why Total Wine is so beloved with their wide-reaching arrays of beer, liquor and wines that make hard-to-find brands a cinch to acquire. Kansas City staple Gomer’s takes Silver, with a long history that stretches back to 1960 makes it clear why they’re a trusted name. Mike’s Wine and Spirits uncorks the Bronze, a 20-year-old staple that specializes in old standbys and exotic new finds.
BEST AUTO DEALER (DOMESTIC)
With the record-setting year it enjoyed to surge past $4 billion in sales, it’s entirely fitting that CABLE-DAHMER AUTOMOTIVE GROUP is recognized as the Gold-bearer in regional domestic auto sales. It carries the flag for General Motors, Jeep and Kia lines at eight dealerships in the region. Three generations deep in family leadership, the BOB SIGHT AUTO GROUP has developed a deep and loyal customer base on its way securing Silver. It splits that runner-up distinction with DICK SMITH FORD. The Ford brand racks up yet another honor with Bronze going to Bob Allen Ford for its new and used fleets, parts and service.
BEST OFFICE/INTERIOR FURNISHING FIRM
Gold here goes to Circadia. Created in 2024 through a combination of Scott Rice, a Kansas City presence since the 1920s, and Color Art, which began 80 years ago as a printing press-turned-office solutions company. It’s successful combination of design firms stretches all over Missouri and into Kansas—a shoo-in for top honors. Silver this year belongs to Trilogie, which prides itself on approaching design from a people-first holist approach, which clearly has resonated with readers. Encompass, your one-stop Haworth dealership, takes Bronze this year as a Women’s Business Enterprise National Council-certified company.
BEST WOMEN’S APPAREL
A Kansas City tradition whose very name is associated with high quality, class and from-the-heart sincerity, it’s no surprise that Halls takes Gold for best women’s apparel. With a history of fine quality and luxury styles, Halls is a brand name that everyone can trust. In Clover Boutique takes Silver this year, and this neighborhood boutique with a lineup that has certainly proved its mettle. Founded by two friends over 12 years ago, In Clover offers clothes, accessories and jewelry that you can’t miss out on. Bronze this year is a tie between Lalli’s Boutique and Scout & Molly’s.
BEST MEN’S APPAREL
Halls just can’t be beat for women’s or men’s fashion. If you’re not convinced that Halls deserves the praise, just pay them a visit. Halls is built for you: the staff, including style experts ready for consultation, are ready to help find the right accessories, clothes and footwear. Dillard’s is a national brand, but obviously beloved here in KC. With three convenient locations, Dillard’s has something for everyone. Peters Clothiers is our Bronze winner, offering 80-plus years of experience designing men’s fashion and finding the perfect fit for you.
BEST TEAM-BUILDING EXPERIENCE
It’s a universal rule that a team needs rapport on and off the clock, and our readers have a great selection for developing a team’s natural chemistry. The Culinary Center of Kansas City is our readers’ Gold selection for the unique collaborative experience of interactive cooking events that break down cooking as a team. Creative Culture Studio is the Silver pick this year, where all kinds of DIY projects are available to unleash a team’s inner creativity. The Bronze winner this year is a tie between two venues where teams can compete while sharing meals: Topgolf and Chicken N Pickle.
