Please join us to toast the courage and resilience of the children we serve. Enjoy food and wine pairings, a silent auction, a book signing, and a gourmet dinner and program featuring actress, author, and passionate advocate for mental health Mariel Hemingway at beautiful Union Station.
Hemingway, the granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway, released two compelling memoirs in 2015 in conjunction with National Mental Awareness month—Out Came The Sun, and a book aimed at young adults, Invisible Girl. In them, she shares a candid account of her troubled childhood in a famous family haunted by mental illness. Her books aim to reduce the stigma of mental illness and start people talking—and finding solutions to mental health issues.
Proceeds from this special Toast for the Children celebration will support mental health services and programs for area youth struggling to overcome traumatic life experiences and mental illness. For more information, please call Irwin Herrero, Foundation Special Events Manager, at (816) 932-1664 or email iherrero@saint-lukes.org.
For 120 years, Crittenton Children’s Center has been caring for the emotional and behavioral health needs of children and families throughout the Kansas City community. We opened Kansas City’s first children’s psychiatric hospital in 1979. Located on a picturesque, 96-acre campus in Southeast Kansas City, the facility provides children the serenity and privacy they need to assist their healing process. The highly trained professional staff works intensively with patients to help them achieve stability and positive mental health, and to acquire the skills and resources needed to mature into healthy and productive adults.
Thanks to supporters like you, Crittenton Children’s Center provides children and youth with specialized psychiatric and behavioral health care that might otherwise be unavailable. Serving more than 6,000 children per year, Crittenton is one of the few psychiatric facilities to boast a full array of services, including acute psychiatric hospitalization, foster care and adoption services, specialized residential treatment, intensive outpatient chemical dependency treatment, in-home therapy, and in-school prevention services.
