Kansans to receive $63 million in FEMA unemployment

Gov. Kelly announced the approval of Kansas’ grant application for FEMA Lost Wages Assistance, eligible individuals in the state now expected to receive $63 million in unemployment relief funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

On Tuesday, Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly announced the state’s application for FEMA grant funding has been approved.

Funding for FEMA Lost Wages Assistance comes in from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Kansas expected to receive $63 million in funding.

Only certain individuals are eligible for financial assistance provided through the grant, which was created to help U.S. citizens who have lost their jobs due to COVID-19.

Restrictions determining who is applicable show that funding will only be available to those receiving at least $100 in unemployment benefits, among other criteria.

According to a press release from the governor’s office, the funding program will take several weeks to execute, the Kansas Department of Labor estimating that those who are eligible for funding will begin receiving benefits no sooner than late September.

“I appreciate the Federal Emergency Management Agency for its quick response to my administration’s application, and for making these funds available to those who need them throughout our state and nation,” Kelly said, going on to say the state would work quickly to distribute money.

“However, it is still critically important for Congress to create a coherent strategy and act on a long-term solution for those who have found themselves unable to work due to the pandemic’s impact on our economy,” Kelly said.

Financial assistance provided through the program is said to last until FEMA decides to end the program, a date which has not yet been determined. Payments will also be retroactive to Aug. 1.
