Kansas City below the national response rate for U.S. 2020 Census



An analysis of recent response rate data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2020 Census Response Rate Map shows that Kansas City is below the national response rate average of 62.1 percent.

A new analysis of recent response rate data and demographics information from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2020 Census Response Rate Map and American Community surveys reveals trends about response rates based on factors like annual income, education, diversity of neighborhoods, and households with children under five. 

Response rates in Kansas City are below the national response rate, Kansas City showing a rate of 56% compared to 62.1% nationally and 65.9% in Kansas. 

Insights for Wyandotte County and surrounding areas as of July 19, 2020 include:   

  • Communities where more than 30% of households are Hispanic or Black/Africa American have response rates of 46.4% and 45.7% respectively. This is lower than communities with more than 50% of households that are White (65.5%).
  • Communities where more than 75% of households are renting have response rates of 48.7% compared to communities where fewer than 25% of households are renting have response rates of 69%.
  • Communities where more than 30% of households are single mothers with children under 18 are less likely to respond with response rates of 48.4% compared to communities where 0% to 10% of households are single mothers (70.9%).
