Protesting Turns Silent

There were more protests over the weekend in Kansas City over the death of George Floyd, but they took a different tone over the weekend.

They were mostly silent, which is a big contrast to what we have seen in the prior week, when there was damage around the Country Club Plaza and surrounding areas.

Meanwhile, there are reports of a neighborhood surveillance program with cameras in their area working well, which comes at a time when the Kansas City Police Department has gotten approval for KCPD body camera funding.

The cameras are being funded by the local DeBruce Foundation.

“We have been listening to the community’s call for change,” Chief Richard Smith said last week. “The community has repeatedly asked for body cameras. I am pleased to announce that the DeBruce Foundation has donated enough money to allow us to begin to purchase these cameras. We just learned about this late this afternoon.”

Protesters have been calling for the use of the cameras to increase transparency of police activities.
