Children’s Mercy announced it will lay off 115 of its staff, 1.2% of its workforce.

The hospital announced it would lay off 115 employees, which would be made up of nonclinical administrative, leadership and support roles. Children’s Mercy has over 8,000 full-time employees.

The hospital cited rising costs as one reason for the layoffs.

In addition to the layoffs, the hospital will outsource 473 “revenue cycle and scheduling team members” to Ensemble Health Partners. Children’s Mercy will still employ those workers but will work through Ensemble. Ohio-based Ensemble is a revenue cycle management company for hospitals and is owned by Bon Secours Mercy Health, which is also headquartered in Ohio.

“Children’s Mercy is committed to providing exceptional care for patients, families and our community and to expanding access to pediatric care close to home,” Children’s Mercy staff said in a statement. “Like children’s hospitals nationwide, we face rising costs and reimbursement that has not kept pace. We continue to evolve our organizational structure to ensure we can remain one of only 28 independent, freestanding children’s hospitals in the country, focused on kids.”

Last month, Children’s Mercy announced it would soon no longer be participating in the Affordable Care Act Marketplace network of coverage. The hospital would no longer be a part of the ACA Marketplace coverage effective Jan. 1, 2027. The decision to leave the marketplace was not made by Children’s Mercy, the hospital said in a statement at the time.
