Overland Park City Council Approved Black & Veatch’s $1.3B HQ Redevelopment Plan

In a unanimous decision, the Overland Park City Council voted to approve plans for the new Black & Veatch headquarters.

The engineering firm’s new headquarters is part of the redevelopment project dubbed Overland Park Plaza II. The project is located near the existing black & Veatch HQ at 112th and Lamar Avenue.

The Overland Park City Council approved a rezoning request for the area in May.

“As we continue to grow, our new World Headquarters represents an investment in the next chapter of our company, creating a destination designed to inspire, connect and empower our employee-owners, strengthen collaboration and innovation with our clients, attract and develop world-class talent and welcome our community,” Mario Azar, Black & Veatch Chairman and CEO, said in a release following the City Council’s decision. “We are proud to continue and strengthen our longstanding presence in Overland Park and the greater Kansas City area and grateful for the partnerships that have helped bring our vision to life.”

Key elements of the new Black & Veatch headquarters, according to the release:

  • A nine-story building with capacity to substantially grow its local employee-owner workforce
  • Open, collaborative workspaces and employee-owner amenities including wellness and mothers rooms, a fitness facility, outdoor terraces, food and beverage offerings, and an on-site daycare
  • Exterior green spaces designed to support employee-owner wellbeing and create an engaging campus environment that complements the mixed-use development
  • A new parking garage with a weather-protected skywalk connection to the building
  • Sustainable design and building performance aligned with the company’s focus on sustainability

The project includes redeveloping Black and Veatch’s main building and adding approximately 298 residential apartments, 729,000 square feet of office space, and 25,000 square feet of commercial/retail space intended as a daycare.

At full build-out, the total cost of all phases of the Project is approximately $1.33 billion. The project will also be completed within a phased development plan. Black & Veatch’s newly redeveloped headquarters is set to be completed sometime in 2029. The entire redevelopment is expected to be completed by 2038.

Black & Veatch will hold a ceremonial groundbreaking event in mid-November.
