Texas-based Digital Realty presented plans to the De Soto City Council about a new data center campus.

The proposed data center campus would be located at Astra Enterprise Park, located near the Panasonic electric vehicle battery plant. The development of the campus would span two parcels—Astra North and Astra South—near W. 103rd Street and Lexington Avenue on the former Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant.

The first phase of the project is expected to cost approximately $4 billion, excluding data center equipment. In April, Digital Realty purchased around 1,400 acres at Astra Enterprise Park from Sunflower Redevelopment. The full campus project includes nine buildings.

During the peak of the campus’ construction phase, Digital Realty says the project would support up to 1000 construction jobs and would create 250 jobs once the facility is operational.

Two of the proposed buildings on the campus will be substations used to power the facility. One station would be built by Digital Realty, while the other would be built by Evergy, Enrique Bellido, head of due diligence and entitlements at Digital Realty, said during the City Council meeting.

“Digital Realty will be funding all the improvements associated with the transmission lines as well as the substations themselves. We are not asking the community of De Soto to pay for any of those improvements. We will pay for those ourselves,” Bellido said.

Digital Realty would be paying approximately $300 million to cover the cost of infrastructure improvements, including the substation and transmission lines.

Digital Realty would also fund a new industrial wastewater treatment plant that will be designed and built by the City of De Soto. Additionally, the campus would be allocated 1 million gallons of water per day for the north parcel; however, the campus would also utilise storage tanks to reduce water usage throughout the year.

Digital Realty still needs to submit formal plans of the data center campus to the City of De Soto. The developer plans to hold an open house at a future date to engage with community concerns and feedback.
