Geoff Myer, Manager, can also barely stop running on a great spring day at Planters Seed and Spice Company, a well known fixture at 5th and Walnut in the City Market area. March through May, his traffic increases as much as ten times the norm. A slower foot race starts again in September and October. Between the two spring and fall planting seasons, Planters generates about 65% of their business. This is a shift from twenty years ago when even much more of their business was concentrated during those periods. What makes the season even more challenging, according to Myer, is that if it's raining or cold, especially on Saturdays (they've resisted opening on Sundays), people won't come down, and then they won't plant, period, after a certain amount of time. The business is forever lost for that year. Ouch. Consequently, he knows if Planters will have a good year by the end of May.
