Mark Tatum mark tatum
Mark Tatum, a partner at Shook, Hardy & Bacon, tries cases and represents clients from around the world, but his defense work within the courtroom is only one facet of his accomplishment.
“The firm has provided me the opportunity to be active in its diversity efforts as well as pro bono matters,” says the 38-year-old, who serves on Shook’s diversity committee. There, Tatum is able to help clients such as juveniles, the indigent and the incarcerated—people who might not other-wise receive adequate representation. Tatum is a member of the Missouri Organization of Defense Lawyers, DRI, the American Bar Association and
the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association. KCMBA has even recognized Tatum with its annual Volunteer Attorney Project award.
But Tatum, who is married with three children, says his perspective on life goes beyond litigation tactics. In addition to coaching Little League sports (for which he was named 2008 Manager of the Year by the 3 & 2 Baseball Club of Kansas City), Tatum is a member of the Youth Volunteer Corps of America, serves on the HR committee for the Kansas City chapter of the American Red Cross and is a 2008 graduate of Kansas City Tomorrow.
Chris Unruh chris unruh
Kansas City native Chris Unruh sets high standards for the betterment of everything in which he is involved. “I will always strive to make Kansas City a community my children will be proud to call home,” says this father of two.
Unruh joined MarketSphere Consulting almost seven years ago as a founding member. In 2008, he was named partner, and he now runs one of the largest practices for the firm.
But high standards don’t end at work for this 35-year-old. Unruh is a member of the United Way Young Leaders Society and a graduate of the Centurions Leadership Program. His most significant contribution to Kansas City, though, might be in his work with Gilda Club.
“I am currently serving as treasurer of the board of Gilda’s Club, which is actively raising money to secure a location where the increasing number of people touched by cancer can gather to share their challenges,” says Unruh, who has witnessed firsthand the hardships patients, families and friends face with a cancer diagnosis. He was diagnosed with melanoma in 2004; his sister-in-law was diagnosed with thyroid cancer soon after. “I am passionate about helping the club become a force in our community.”
Anthony Torres anthony torres
The postman might ring twice, but the taxman only rings once—and Tony Torres answers the call. As an audit partner with Deloitte & Touche, he serves Kansas City’s largest consumer businesses and retail industries.
“I specialize in the audit and preparation of consolidated financial statements and have a strong knowledge of accounting and reporting issues with SEC registrants, including accounting, reporting and corporate governance,” says the 35-year-old, who is a resource for the Kansas City office on International Financial Reporting Standards. Torres also leads the firm’s diversity and inclusion efforts and serves on the advisory committee for the firm’s national Retail Fellows Program.
Being the father of two children, Tatum knows the importance of serving community as well as industry, and he uses his business sense to work for social causes. “I’m active in helping Deloitte organize and sponsor community events such as the Light the Night Walk for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Race for the Cure and Impact Day,” says Torres, a supporter of the United Way. Torres is also an involved with the KCADC and serves on St. Michael’s Parish Finance Council.
