We honor the pioneers of grand vision who transformed this cow town into a sophisticated city. They paved the muddy streets of Kansas City and paved the way for fellow entrepreneurs and philanthropists to follow.

We recognize selfless Corporate Citizens, and how they continue to have a positive impact on the lives of all Kansas Citians. They've achieved far more than their predecessors of great vision could have ever have dreamed.

We celebrate the success and establish the greater crusade of Kansas City's Promise, where we pledge to build the character and competence of our community's youth by providing caring adults; safe places; a healthy start; marketable skills; and opportunities for each youth to serve.

We celebrate the Kansas City family--of which this community has built its foundation.

We want your head to know the facts. We want your hearts to know the faces--each and every one of the "Faces of Philanthropy".

Kansas City has quietly developed a reputation in philanthropic circles as a "city of giving." We have launched projects here that in their scope and generosity stun the outsider. But beyond the large and obvious financial gifts, what impresses the observer most about the Kansas City area is just how widespread the philanthropic urge is. Statistically, in fact, the less affluent give as high or higher proportion of their "time, treasure, or talent" to charity as do their more affluent fellow citizens.

Like many cities in the middle of America, Kansas City developed its communitarian spirit almost as a necessity in its pioneering phase. But the city has not grown so sophisticated or so self-important as to outgrow that spirit. Our citizens remain dependent on one another, and they are not afraid to acknowledge that dependency or express gratitude when helped.

In a city so inclined to give, it is difficult to single out groups or individuals. This problem is compounded because so many of Kansas City's most generous citizens are reluctant to call attention to their efforts. Happily, in the pages that follow some of Kansas City's finest philanthropies take the opportunity to pay heed to the folks who have helped them help others.

We expect that among "the faces" you will find some that you recognize from your own efforts. If not, we encourage you to make some new acquaintances. There is not a group represented herein that could not use your help, and there are certainly many others not mentioned who could.
