In Appreciation of Patriotism

There are few Americans that really know of the noble foundation and principles this country was built on. Fewer still recall the times of war and turmoil that in an ironic way, brought America together much closer as a nation. As a member of what many call the “Greatest Generation,” I have to say the recent outpouring of patriotism is as good as it gets.

In the many years I’ve lived in this area, I’ve yet to see media display the class and bold character that was on the front cover and throughout the October edition of Ingram’s. I commend your staff for producing such an uplifting message of patriotism with the symbols of “Old Glory” in front of Liberty Memorial on the cover, the “Restoration” message shared, the poem about “One America” and particularly the “Tribute to America.”

Your organization can stand proud to share this exceptional work of patriotism in our community.

Operation Breakthrough
We can’t thank Ingram’s Magazine enough for all the kindness you’ve shown Operation Break-through. Your support of our children’s cause—in print and through gifts to our Oct. 5 anniversary celebration/auction—means a lot to sisters Berta and Corita and their staff and volunteers.

We heard a lot of nice comments on the article you published. Sister Berta was very happy to have a chance to express her views in Ingram’s. The magazines arrived safely at my office, and we will give copies to guests at our anniversary celebration. Thanks for helping us get the word out.

Your kindness has and will continue to make a real difference in the lives of real children in need. Thanks for doing so much to help.

Unheard Voices
I read with interest your article “The Business of Law” for your Industry Outlook Forum (Sept. issue). The article was informative and well written. However, what I found most interesting (based on the photos and quotes in the article) is that no women were included in the panel and only one African American (who is a male).

Please explain how a group of highly paid white males are going to recruit and entice minorities when the voices of those they want to hire haven’t been heard? There were many assumptions in the article regarding why women attorneys do not want to work the long hours normally required of associates.

I can’t speak for other minorities, however, if these law firms want to recruit more women, assistance with day care on-site or nearby would be one major step in the right direction.

I left SHB because I too needed a job that afforded more flexibility. This is also important for paralegals who often work side by side with attorneys and travel as well. I feel that many people believe that being happy in a less stressful job and spending time with family is more important than making money for other people.

Downtown Worth The Trip
Your column, “Defining Downtown” (Sept. issue), was excellent, and right on point.

And, yes, Bob Jones Shoes believes in downtown! As our positioning statement for Bob Jones Shoes states, “It’s worth the trip downtown.” And soon, we hope for more than just great shoes at great prices.

With the best of intentions, city planners have mounted ambitious projects aimed at putting the sparkle back into downtown. But it’s the grass roots efforts of those of us who live downtown, work downtown, and have our businesses and invested dollars downtown that are methodically and “organically” revitalizing this area. We owe a great deal to good stewards such as Ernie and Rocky Horowitz of Bob Jones Shoes.

Several years ago we moved our advertising agency into the Crossroads District to better serve our client, Bob Jones Shoes. We found the area so vibrant, we’ve added The Grand Gallery & Coffee as well [an art gallery & coffee house]. We look forward to more businesses joining us in this thriving area.

CORRECTIONS
In the October 2001 Special Medical Edition, Ingram’s inadvertently omitted the names of three doctors from the list of Top Doctor Alumni from previous years. They were Drs. Jeffrey Waters, Michael Welch and Sandra Willsie. Please accept our apology for this oversight.
