Focus On Higher Ed Funding
Thank you for sending me your memo of June 21, 2002, indicating
your Higher Education Industry Outlook meeting in Kansas City on the morning
of August 14, 2002. This is a very good idea. Both Missouri and Kansas
are facing very difficult times and we know that there have been severe
cuts to public higher education both in the state of Missouri and the
state of Kansas. I want to congratulate Ingrams Magazine for making
the decision to host this very important Higher Education Outlook meeting
for the region.

Closer
To A Cure
The final numbers are now in, and I would like to announce
that the 2002 Man & Woman of the Year Campaign raised more than $182,000!
Thanks to an outstanding group of committee members, candidates and sponsors,
this is the biggest campaign in our Mid America Chapter history! Congratulations
to the 2002 Man of the Year, Sandy Cohen of Union Broadcasting, and to
the Woman of the Year, Kara Settles, M.D. of Truman Med.
On behalf of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, our board of trustees
and the patients we serve, I would like to thank you for your generous
coverage of our campaign. As you know, media interest in the Society helps
us raise awareness and gather more support for our mission and our programs.
Your support has made Man & Woman of the Year more successful and
will bring us many steps closer to fulfilling our mission: to cure leukemia,
lymphoma, Hodgkins disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality
of life for patients and their families.
Thank you again for your generous contribution and your continued support.
I truly appreciate your efforts in our fight against blood-related cancers.

Volatile
Waters
I watch with great interest each summer when Ingrams
releases the annual Corporate Report 100 competition. In fact this has
become an annual ritual for me through my professional career. Of all
that Ingrams covers editorially each year, Corporate Report 100
might be the bestcertainly its my favorite. As a student that
observes business models and an analyst of fast growth businesses, I have
to tell you that there appears to be a strong correlation between those
companies that emerge on your listparticularly the Top 10and
businesses that cannot withstand the fast pace through the early phases
of their first 5 year business cycle. Kudos to those who earn their position
on this prestigious list, but there should be great caution in traveling
these uncharted turbulent waters. The coverage improves with each year.
Keep up the good work.

CORRECTION:
In the July issue of Ingrams,
it was stated that Ed Smith was a former LAWMO lawyer (Corporate Care,
"And Justice for All"). In fact, Mr. Smith never practiced with
Legal Aid of Western Missouri, but was a founding partner of the KC law
firm Smith, Gill, Fisher and Butts, which later merged with the Kansas
City office of Bryan Cave LLP.
