Black Outs

If the brownouts still have the potential of shining brightly again, even if for a moment, the blackouts are shut out and shut down.

Steve Rose. Rose struggles to find a place for himself after selling The Sun newspapers to Lionheart. If Rose can reclaim, and hold his column in the Sun-he may be a Brown-Out after all. See intro for details.

David Ucko. The man behind Science City at Union Station, Ucko was the toast of the town-and a regular on these pages-until Science City actually opened. Yikes! Ucko learned the hard way that you only have one chance to make a first impression. Now, he is just toast-and somewhere other than at KC's Union Station.

Nick Bashkiroff. An another power elite alumnus, Bashkiroff was the driving force behind the Power & Light District. When Stan Durwood died he carried the District's flickering torch. But the next thing you know, Nick was out of money, out of luck, and out of town quicker than you could say "Brice Harris."

Rabbi Michael Zedek. The rumor was that the influential rabbi would stay in KC with his congregation as long as Cleaver remained mayor. Folks thought he would then yield to internal pressure and lead the flock to the Promised Land of Johnson County. He took everyone by surprise when he abandoned it altogether for Cincinnati. He seemed too much of a fixture to leave.

What we have tried to create in these pages is the most measured calculus of metropolitan power yet done. Power here is so fluid, however, that the meter can twitch between last public appearance of a given individual and publication of this issue. Forgive us our oversights in advance.

What we have not measured, and don't presume too, is the moral and ethical force of the powerful. That calculus we will leave to that ultimate power broker in the sky. We suspect that His information will be even better than our own.
