After the one-two punch of Harley Davidson and Procter & Gamble announcing they are leaving Kansas City, a new company has stepped in saying they’re building a new plant in Blue Springs and bringing 300 jobs with them.

Faurecia, an automotive technology company, will build a new $60 million, 250,000-sq-ft interiors production facility in Blue Springs, according to the Kansas City Area Development Council.  In a statement released Thursday, KCADC President and CEO Tim Cowden said, “Kansas City offers a strong competitive advantage to growing manufacturing operations, particularly in the automotive industry.  We are very proud to welcome Faurecia to our robust automotive cluster and look forward to the company’s success in our region.”

Faurecia is planning to build the new facility adjacent to N.E. 20th Street on the north side of I-70 in Blue Springs.  This plant will specifically be used to manufacture and assemble door and instrument panels.  The company said in the statement it chose this region because of the skilled work force.

“Faurecia is proud to open this new site and to provide new opportunities for local job seekers,” said Donald Hampton, Jr., president of Faurecia Interiors in North America. “The Kansas City metro and the Blue Springs area are known for being a source of excellence in American manufacturing and we’re looking forward to building on that expertise and skill set as we continue to provide the very best to our customers.”

While the news is good for people who may have just been laid off by Harley Davidson or P&G, don’t think Faurecia is immune to layoffs.  The discontinuation of the Chrysler 200 resulted in layoffs in Detroit in 2016 and they did a series of hiring and laying off in Sterling Hills, MI that same year.

According to the company’s Web site, France-based Faurecia has 330 sites in 34 countries and employs more than 100,000 people worldwide.  Their North American headquarters is located in Auburn Hills, Mich.,  and in 2016, in North America alone, the company did $5.78 billion in sales.  As of 2016, Faurecia employed 20,000 people at 47 locations in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

If you’re wondering what the company makes, odds are you’ve used their products hundreds or thousands of times already.  One in four automobiles is outfitted with a product made by Faurecia. With customers like Volkswagen, Peugeot, BMW, Daimler, Fiat-Chrysler and Toyota, it would be hard to find someone who hasn’t sat in one of their seats or used one of their center consoles or put their feet up on one of their dashboards.
