Earthquake Raises Insurance Questions

By Jim Moore

The earthquake that shook the Midwest on Saturday morning also jogged people’s minds about the subject of earthquake insurance. For policyholders unsure of their options, state insurance departments are excellent sources of information on the subject.

Ken Selzer, Kansas Commissioner of Insurance, says “Earthquake coverage is not a part of a regular homeowners, renters or condominium insurance policy,” adding, “If your insurance company offers it — and many do — coverage can be added by including an endorsement to your policy or by purchasing a separate earthquake policy.”

The same holds true in Missouri and elsewhere.

Earthquake occurrences are great reminders that business, home and property owners need to have their coverage assessed well before the need arises. According to Commissioner Selzer, “Most insurers won’t sell any new earthquake insurance for 30 to 60 days after a recent earthquake. Check with your insurance company or local insurance agent to be sure.”

For state-specific information on earthquake insurance in Missouri, contact the Insurance Consumer Hotline at 800-726-7390. In Kansas, call the Consumer Assistance Hotline at 1-800-432-2484. Both are staffed between the hours of 8am and 5pm.
